Math & Nature

Great creations come from the mathematical mind, so we must always consider all that is mathematical as a means of mental development.
— Dr. Maria Montessori

Nature offers children the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts through the world around them. Activities such as counting leaves and sorting or organizing objects into patterns help children practice 1:1 correspondence, counting, and ordering. Exploring geometric forms in natural structures, such as the symmetry in flowers or the spirals in shells, strengthens spatial awareness and an understanding of geometry. These activities deepen children's connection to the natural world while fostering a concrete understanding of math and its real-world applications, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
